River observations displayed on this page are sourced from U.S. Geological Survey monitoring stations. USGS real-time data are provisional and subject to revision. Observation times and data availability may differ between gauges because collection methods, equipment, telemetry, and reporting schedules are station-specific.
A station may remain visible on the map and in the monitoring network even when current observations are delayed or unavailable. When live data are too old to be treated as current, this website intentionally suppresses the old measurement rather than presenting it as a current river condition.
Shenandoah Fly Fishing also maintains infrastructure for locally operated monitoring stations. A local station will only appear publicly after its location and operation are approved and its measurements are suitable for public use. Local observations will supplement, not replace, official USGS data.

River-gauge information is provided for general planning and situational awareness. It is not a flood-warning system, a boating advisory, or a determination that any section of the river is safe to float, boat, fish, or wade.
River conditions can vary significantly between monitoring locations and can change after the most recent observation. Weather, tributary flows, localized rainfall, dam operations, debris, water temperature, access conditions, and other hazards may not be represented by the displayed gauge values.
A current reading at one gauge does not establish current conditions elsewhere on the river. Likewise, a delayed or unavailable station should not be interpreted as evidence that conditions are unchanged.
Before boating, floating, or wading, use authoritative weather and emergency information, observe current local conditions, and exercise independent judgment. Do not rely on this website as the sole source for determining whether conditions are safe.
Fishing, boating, or wading thresholds will not be published until sufficient observations and experience support useful location-specific guidance.
